The term scooter refers to a piece of battery powered mobility equipment. Often the term scooter is used when referring to a scooter or a power wheelchair. While both are propelled using battery power there are a couple of significant differences. A scooter is operated using controls mounted on the steering column or what is referred to as the tiller while a power wheel chair is operated using a joystick.
Scooters are controlled by the use of a thumb operated wig-wag switch for a throttle. If you push on the right side the scooter moves forward and if you push on the left it goes in reverse. Steering is done by holding the handle bars and turning right or left while pressing the throttle. A user must have the strength and cognitive ability to coordinate both the throttle and steering to safely operate a scooter.
If required we can order the scooter with the throttle function reversed from the factory and/or depending on the model we can program it here in our service department. This way forward would be on the left and reverse on the right. The purpose of this would be to accommodate those that have decreased function on one side of their body. All scooters have a swivel seat function to aid in transfers and most disassemble into pieces without tools for ease of transport in the family vehicle.
Usually the user of a scooter will have more function than a person in a power chair. Scooters can be ordered with a variety options including 3 and 4 wheel scooters, compact to heavy scooters, basic to captain’s chairs and many accessories like baskets and lights.
